A freight car needs a braking system that works without any air supply. The manual brake device provides exactly that: it lets staff apply, hold and release braking force by hand on a standing wagon, on a siding, during marshalling or in an emergency when the pneumatic brake is unavailable. It is the parking and shunting brake of the wagon, and its reliability directly affects yard safety and loading operations.
Manual brake devices are mainly divided into foot-operated brake devices and hand brakes. Chinese railway freight cars mainly adopt the FSW and NSW manual brake devices, and both are ratchet-type hand brakes: a ratchet and pawl mechanism holds the applied brake force positively, so the brake does not creep off while the wagon stands loaded.
The FSW manual brake device is composed of the hand wheel, driving shaft, chain winding shaft, handle, base and box shell. The hand wheel drives the shaft, the chain winding shaft takes up the brake chain, and the ratchet holds the set position; the base and box shell carry the load and protect the mechanism from weather and contamination.

The NSW manual brake device was developed from the FSW through partial local improvements. It retains the advantages of the FSW design, yet simplifies the structure, offers better anti-rolling protection and raises the parking safety of freight cars — a decisive benefit for wagons that stand unattended on sidings and gradients.
The NSW device is composed of the box shell, base, hand wheel, function handle, driving shaft, chain winding shaft, ratchet wheel, large gear, small gear, clutch and chain. The gear pair and clutch arrangement is what allows the compact, single-handle control of braking and release compared with the earlier design.

The NSW-I manual brake device is produced by optimizing the box shell and base of the NSW design. Its internal structure, hand wheel and main technical parameters are identical to the NSW type, so spare parts, operation and maintenance practice carry over directly. When fitted to open-top wagons and box cars, its mounting position can be shifted within a certain range: this avoids interference between the hand wheel and the gangway bellows of passenger cars when freight cars are coupled to passenger stock — a practical detail that matters for mixed trains and for operators running freight and passenger vehicles on the same network.

| Model | Type | Typical application | Key functions |
|---|---|---|---|
| FSW | Ratchet hand brake | C63A type cars, privately owned industrial and mining cars | Braking, staged release, rapid release |
| NSW | Ratchet hand brake | All types of railway freight cars | Simplified structure, good anti-rolling protection |
| NSW-I | Ratchet hand brake (NSW optimized shell and base) | Open-top wagons and box cars, incl. mixed freight/passenger trains | Same internals and parameters as NSW, adjustable mounting position |
